Phil Collins – The Artist
Philip David Charles Collins (born 1951) is an English drummer, singer-songwriter, record producer, and actor. He is best known as the drummer/singer of the rock band Genesis from 1970 to 1996 and for his solo career which began in 1981. Between 1982 and 1990, Collins scored three UK and seven US number-one singles as a solo artist. When his work with Genesis, his work with other artists, as well as his solo career is totalled, he had more top 40 singles than any other artist during the 1980s. His most successful singles from the period include “In the Air Tonight”, “Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)”, “Sussudio”, and “Another Day in Paradise”.
You Can’t Hurry Love – The Song
“You Can’t Hurry Love” is a 1966 song originally recorded by The Supremes on the Motown label. Written and produced by Motown production team Holland–Dozier–Holland, the song topped the charts in both the UK and the US. Sixteen years later, it would become a number-one hit in the UK when Phil Collins re-recorded the song. It reached number one on the UK Singles Chart for two weeks in 1983. The song, a memory of a mother’s words of encouragement (“My mama said ‘you can’t hurry love/No you just have to wait’ “) telling her daughter that with patience she will find that special someone one day, is an example of the strong influence of gospel music present in much of R&B and soul music.
The Stopwatch – The Shape
This record has been modelled into a pocket stopwatch. A stopwatch is a timepiece designed to measure the amount of time that elapses between its activation and deactivation. The timing functions are traditionally controlled by two buttons on the case. Pressing the top button starts the timer running, and pressing the button a second time stops it, leaving the elapsed time displayed. A press of the second button then resets the stopwatch to zero. The second button is also used to record split times or lap times. When the split time button is pressed while the watch is running it allows the elapsed time to that point to be read, but the watch mechanism continues running to record total elapsed time. Pressing the split button a second time allows the watch to resume display of total time. The device is used when time periods must be measured precisely and with a minimum of complications. Laboratory experiments and sporting events like sprints are good examples.
