Yazz And The Plastic Population – The Artist/s
After being a member of the England under-19 volleyball team and a spell as a catwalk model, Yazz (Born Yasmin Evans) scored a number of club hits after recording with the group The Biz in 1983. Her first commercial success came in early 1988, when she sang on Coldcut’s “Doctorin’ the House”. She soon launched a solo career on Big Life records, a label set up by her husband Jazz Summers, releasing her debut solo single, “The Only Way Is Up”, in1988. It was a commercial success and became the second-biggest-selling UK single of the year. Her follow-up “Stand Up for Your Love Rights” was another big hit while her debut album Wanted was certified double platinum in the UK in September 1989. A second Big Life album, was scheduled for release in 1990 following the single “Treat Me Good” but the album was shelved when Yazz parted ways with the label. She continued to release singles throughout the 1990s, but failed to emulate the success of the song ’The Only Way is Up’. Yazz reevaluated her career and give up a lifestyle that included her failed marriage to Summers and her dependency on alcohol. Instead, she decided to “turn her life over to Christ” and is an active member of the Calahonda Baptist Church.e.
The Only Way is Up – The Song
‘The Only Way is Up’ is a song written by George Jackson and Johnny Henderson and originally released in 1980 as a single by soul singer Otis Clay. In 1988, it became a chart-topping single for Yazz and the Plastic Population. The song is the official theme tune for award-winning ITV2 series The Only Way Is Essex. The song was a favourite of M People’s, who would frequently play it on their live tours. The Yazz version was produced by Jonathan More and Matt Black (better known as dance duo Coldcut, who had worked with Yazz on their hit single “Doctorin’ the House”). “The Only Way Is Up” was Yazz’s first solo single, credited to her under the name Yazz and the Plastic Population.
