Stan Getz & João Gilbertoa – The Artist/s

Stan Getz (1927 – 1991) was an American jazz saxophonist. Playing primarily the tenor saxophone, Getz was known as “The Sound” because of his warm, lyrical tone, with his prime influence being the wispy, mellow timbre of his idol, Lester Young. Coming to prominence in the late 1940s with Woody Herman’s big band, Getz is described by critic Scott Yanow as “one of the all-time great tenor saxophonists”. Getz performed in bebop and cool jazz groups. Influenced by João Gilberto and Antônio Carlos Jobim, he also helped popularise bossa nova in the United States with the hit 1964 single “The Girl from Ipanema”.

João Gilberto (1931 – 2019) was a Brazilian guitarist, singer, and composer who was a pioneer of the musical genre of bossa nova in the late 1950s. Around the world, he was often called the “father of bossa nova”; in his native Brazil, he was referred to as “O Mito” (“The Legend”)

The Girl From Ipanema – The Song

“The Girl From Ipanema” is a Brazilian bossa nova and jazz song. It was a worldwide hit in the mid-1960s and won a Grammy for Record of the Year in 1965. It was written in 1962, with music by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Portuguese lyrics by Vinícius de Moraes. English lyrics were written later by Norman Gimbel. The first commercial recording was in 1962, by Pery Ribeiro. The Stan Getz recording featuring the vocal debut of Astrud Gilberto became an international hit. This version had been shortened from the version on the album Getz/Gilberto which had also included the Portuguese lyrics sung by Astrud’s then husband João Gilberto. It was popular in both the UK and the US and charted highly throughout the world. Numerous recordings have been used in films, sometimes as an elevator music cliché. It is believed to be the second-most recorded pop song in history, after “Yesterday” by The Beatles.

Brazil – The Shape

This record has been cut into the silhouette of Brazil in South America. Brazil, officially the Federative Republic of Brazil, is the largest and easternmost country in South America and Latin America. It is the world’s fifth-largest country by area and the seventh most populous. Its capital is Brasília, and its most populous city is São Paulo. Brazil is a federation composed of 26 states and a Federal District. It is the only country in the Americas where Portuguese is an official language. Brazil is among the world’s most multicultural and ethnically diverse nations, due to over a century of mass immigration from around the world.
