The  Alarm – The Artist

The Alarm are a Welsh rock band that formed in Rhyl, Wales, in 1981. Initially formed as a punk band, The Toilets, in 1977, under lead vocalist Mike Peters, the band soon embraced rock and included marked influences from Welsh language and culture. By opening for acts such as U2 and Bob Dylan, they became a popular new wave pop band of the 1980s. The Alarm’s highest charting single in Britain was 1983’s “Sixty Eight Guns”, which reached number 17 in the UK Singles Chart. Their 1984 album, Declaration, which contained “Sixty Eight Guns”, peaked at number six in the UK Albums Chart. Band members included Mike Peters (alias Eddie Bop), Glyn Crossley (alias Steve Shock), Richard “O’Malley” Jones (alias Bo Larks) and Nigel Buckle (alias Des Troy). 

Spirit of 76 – The Song

‘Spirit of ’76‘  is a song by Welsh rock band, the Alarm. It was written by MacDonald and Peters and came from the bands second studio album, Strength. The song is being sung by a disillusioned man to one of those four lads he met as a youth, or perhaps even to his younger self. This song title refers to a sense of optimism about life. The kind that four young friends and dreamers have when they meet in college and set out to make their own way.

The Poppy – The Shape

This record has been modelled into the silhouette of a poppy flower head which is a symbol adopted by The Alarm and is found on the record sleeves and much of their promotional material. A poppy is a flowering plant in the subfamily Papaveroideae of the family Papaveraceae. Poppies are herbaceous plants, often grown for their colourful flowers. Following the trench warfare in the poppy fields of Flanders, Belgium during World War I, poppies have become a symbol of remembrance of soldiers who have died during wartime.
