Peter Gabriel – The Artist
Peter Brian Gabriel (born 1950) is an English musician, singer, songwriter, record producer and activist. He rose to fame as the original lead singer of the progressive rock band Genesis. After leaving Genesis in 1975, he launched a successful solo career with “Solsbury Hill” as his first single. His 1986 album, So, is his best-selling release and is certified triple platinum in the UK and five times platinum in the U.S. The album’s most successful single, “Sledgehammer”, won a record nine MTV Awards at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards and, according to a report in 2011, it was MTV’s most played music video of all time.
Sledgehammer – The Song
‘Sledgehammer’ is a song by English rock musician Peter Gabriel. It was released as the lead single from his fifth studio album, So, on 21 April 1986.[1] It was produced by Gabriel and Daniel Lanois. It became one of Peter Gabriels biggest hots and was popular internationally.”Sledgehammer” has been described as dance-rock, blue-eyed soul, and funk. The song was influenced by 1960s soul music, in particular that made by Memphis label Stax. The distinctive horn track was provided by a horn section led by Wayne Jackson of the Memphis Horns, Stax’s house musicians.
The Sledgehammer- The Shape
This record is modelled into a type of small sledgehammer. A sledgehammer is a tool with a large, flat, often metal head, attached to a long handle. The long handle combined with a heavy head allows the sledgehammer to gather momentum during a swing and apply a large force compared to hammers designed to drive nails. Along with the mallet, it shares the ability to distribute force over a wide area. This is in contrast to other types of hammers, which concentrate force in a relatively small area.
