He has also appeared in over 50 movies and television shows, sometimes as himself or as characters resembling his stage persona.
Bat Out Of Hell – The Song
Bat Out Of Hell is a song written by Jim Steinman, for the 1977 album Bat Out of Hell and performed by Meat Loaf. It was released as a single in 1979, and again in 1993. Many of the musicians who performed on the track were members of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and Todd Rundgren’s Utopia. This song has become the traditional last song that Meat Loaf performs on all of his live concert shows. The song was inspired by teenage tragedy songs such as “Leader of the Pack” and “Tell Laura I Love Her”, the latter being the first single Jim Steinman had ever bought. Steinman wanted to write the “most extreme crash song of all time”. A musical based on the album, staged by Jay Scheib, has toured the U.S.A and run in London, Toronto and Germany.
Bat – The Shape
Steinman is credited with the album cover concept for Bat Out Of Hell, which was illustrated by Richard Corben. The cover depicts a motorcycle, ridden by a long-haired man, bursting out of the ground in a graveyard. In the background, a large bat perches atop a mausoleum that towers above the rest of the tombstones. Its album cover is considered one of the best record covers of all time.
