Jolene – The Song
Jolene is a song written and performed by American country music artist Dolly Parton. It was released on October 22, 1973 as the first single and title track from her album of the same name, produced by Bob Ferguson. Jolene is one of her best known songs of her country era achieving awards internationally. The song tells of Parton confronting Jolene, a stunningly beautiful woman, who she worries will steal away her lover. Throughout the song, Parton implores Jolene “please, don’t take him just because you can.” The song is unclear about whether or not Jolene intends to steal Parton’s lover, an ambiguity that has been addressed in several answer songs.
