Depeche Mode – The Artist
Depeche Mode are an English electronic band formed in Basildon, Essex in 1980. The group consists of founders Dave Gahan (lead vocals, co-songwriting), Martin Gore (keyboards, guitar, chief songwriting), and Andy Fletcher (keyboards, bass guitar). Depeche Mode released their debut album Speak & Spell in 1981, bringing the band onto the British new wave scene. Founding member Vince Clarke left after the release of the album; they recorded A Broken Frame (1982) as a trio. Gore took over the lead songwriting and, later in 1982, Alan Wilder joined to fill Clarke’s spot, establishing a lineup that continued for 13 years.
It’s Called A Heart – The Song
‘It’s Called A Heart’ is a song by English electronic music band Depeche Mode, released as a single on 16 September 1985. It was included as one of two new songs on the compilation The Singles 81→85 the same year, along with “Shake the Disease”. It reached number 18 on the UK Singles Chart. When talking about the song, frontman Martin Gore said in the November 1985 issue of Popcorn magazine (translated from German): “The text deals with the dangers within a romantic relationship, but even more clearly than our last hit ‘Shake the Disease’ in which it was especially about mutual ache through words. In the new song, it’s about feelings in general – how they arise, how to keep them and how to deal with it. There is a line in there that says “I’ll lend it to you if you treat it tenderly” – that should mean: you should not play with love and expressions of love, because the heart of every human being is their most vulnerable part. You cannot run away immediately when something is not quite working well in a relationship. I am someone who is very much into long-term relationships. Crises are actually good for couples. With them, you get to know each other better and you must pull through together. And what’s also very important to me: two people who love each other must avoid exploiting the psychological weaknesses of the other. When that happens, I think something is not right anyway.”
The Human Heart – The Shape
Modelled into the silhouette of a human heart. The heart is a muscular organ in most animals, which pumps blood through the blood vessels of the circulatory system. The pumped blood carries oxygen and nutrients to the body, while carrying metabolic waste such as carbon dioxide to the lungs. In humans, the heart is approximately the size of a closed fist and is located between the lungs, in the middle compartment of the chest..
