UB40 – The Artist
UB40 are an English reggae and pop band, formed in 1978 in Birmingham, England. The band has had more than 50 singles in the UK Singles Chart, and has also achieved considerable international success with over 70 million records sold worldwide. The ethnic make-up of the band’s original line-up was diverse, with musicians of English, Welsh, Irish, Jamaican, Scottish and Yemeni parentage. The band’s line-up was stable for nearly 29 years, from 1979 until January, when frontman Ali Campbell left the band.
Homely Girl – The Song
Homely Girl is a 1989 single by the UK reggae band UB40. It is a cover-version of a 1974 single by The Chi-Lites which reached number 5 in the UK singles chart, number 3 in the US R&B chart, and number 54 in the Billboard Hot 100. It was the first single from their 1989 album Labour of Love II. It was a great success and the song was used in a TV advert for the Lee Cooper jeans in France. The song tells the story of an ordinary and lonely girl who was ignored at school by the boys but as she grew older she blossomed into a beautiful and sought after woman.
