Ian Dury & The Blockheads – The Artist
Ian Robins Dury (1942 – 2000) was an English singer-songwriter and actor who rose to fame during the late 1970s, during the punk and new wave era of rock music. He was the lead singer of Ian Dury and the Blockheads and before that of Kilburn and the High Roads. Dury’s lyrics are a combination of lyrical poetry, word play, observation of British everyday life, character sketches, and sexual humour. The Blockheads’ sound drew from its members’ diverse musical influences, which included jazz, rock and roll, funk, and reggae, and Dury’s love of music hall. The band was formed after Dury began writing songs with pianist and guitarist Chaz Jankel (the brother of music video, TV, commercial and film director Annabel Jankel). Jankel took Dury’s lyrics, fashioned a number of songs, and they began recording with members of Radio Caroline’s Loving Awareness Band – drummer Charley Charles (born Hugh Glenn Mortimer Charles, Guyana 1945), bassist Norman Watt-Roy, keyboard player Mick Gallagher, guitarist John Turnbull and former Kilburns saxophonist Davey Payne.
Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick – The Song
‘Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick’ is a song by Ian Dury and the Blockheads, first released as a single on Stiff Records in the UK on 23 November 1978. Written by Dury and the Blockheads’ multi-instrumentalist Chaz Jankel, it is the group’s most successful single, reaching number one on the UK Singles Chart in January 1979 as well as reaching the top three in Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, and it was also a top 20 hit in several European countries. The song has been used for numerous purposes since its release including various adverts and in numerous television programmes. It is one of his most popular songs though in keeping with his then-policy of not including singles on his albums the song was omitted from Do it Yourself, the next Ian Dury & The Blockheads album. Paul Hardcastle remixed the track in 1985, stripping all the instrumental tracks and using only Dury’s vocal, and re-recording the instrumental parts with keyboards.
