Sandie Shaw – The Artist
Sandie Shaw MBE (born 1947) is a retired English pop singer. One of the most successful British female singers of the 1960s, she had three UK number one singles with “(There’s) Always Something There to Remind Me” (1964), “Long Live Love” (1965) and “Puppet on a String” (1967). With the latter, she became the first British entry to win the Eurovision Song Contest. She returned to the UK Top 40, for the first time in 15 years, with her 1984 cover of the Smiths song “Hand in Glove”. Shaw retired from the music industry in 2013.
Hand in Glove – The Song
‘Hand in Glove’ is the cover song by Sandie Shaw of the debut single by English rock band the Smiths, written by singer Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr. The cover version recorded by singer Sandie Shaw featuring Smiths members Marr, Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce as backing musicians reached No. 27 on the UK Singles Chart. The song’s theme was “complete loneliness,” and nothing to do with playing golf but is considered by many a golfing song due to the player wearing a glove.
The Golfer – The Shape
This record has been modelled into the silhouette of a man practising his golf swing wearing a glove. Golf is a club-and-ball sport in which players use various clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a course in as few strokes as possible. Golf, unlike most ball games, cannot and does not use a standardised playing area, and coping with the varied terrains encountered on different courses is a key part of the game. Courses typically have either 18 or 9 holes, regions of terrain that each contain a cup, the hole that receives the ball. Each hole on a course contains a teeing ground to start from, and a putting green containing the cup. There are several standard forms of terrain between the tee and the green, such as the fairway, rough (tall grass), and various hazards such as water, rocks, or sand-filled bunkers. Each hole on a course is unique in its specific layout.
