Angelic Upstarts – The Artist/s

Angelic Upstarts are an English punk rock / Oi! band formed in South Shields in 1977. AllMusic calls them “one of the period’s most politically charged and thought-provoking groups”. The band espouse an anti-fascist and socialist working class philosophy, and have been associated with the punk and skinhead subcultures. The band released eight studio albums in their first decade.[3] After a brief split they reformed in 1988, and a number of times subsequently, with new albums appearing in 1992, 2002, 2011, and 2016. The band’s original members were Thomas Mensforth (Mensi)[ on vocals, Ray Cowie (Mond) on guitar, Steve Forsten on bass guitar, and Derek “Decca” Wade on drums. Angelic Upstarts are regarded as pioneers of the Oi! punk subgenre.

England – The Song

‘Englandis a song by English Punk band the Angelic Upstarts, written by Thomas Mensforth and Ray Cowie. It also featured on their third studio album 2,000,000 Voices from 1981

The England Lion – The Shape

This record has been crafted into the silhouette of an English Lion. The Barbary lion is an unofficial national animal of England. In the Middle Ages, the lions kept in the menagerie at the Tower of London were Barbary lions. English medieval warrior rulers with a reputation for bravery attracted the nickname “the Lion”: the most famous example is Richard I of England, known as Richard the Lionheart. Lions are frequently depicted in English heraldry, either as a device on shields themselves, or as supporters. They also appear in sculpture, and sites of national importance. The lion is used as a symbol of English sporting teams, such as the England national cricket team.
