Bright Eyes – The Song

‘Bright Eyes’ is a song written by Mike Batt and sung by Art Garfunkel and used in the soundtrack of the 1978 British animated adventure drama film Watership Down and the later television series of the same name. The song is about death and in the film plays when the rabbit Hazel, the lead character in the film, almost dies after being wounded by a farmer’s gun. Despite its morbid nature, Bright Eyes was a huge success across the US and the UK. The song relates to the transition from life to death. This is highlighted by Hazel, initially when wounded by a farmer’s gun. Finally, at the end of the short animal life-span, Hazel (then Hazel-rah) departs his body and enters a spirit world.

The Rabbit – The Shape

This record has been modelled into the side profile of a rabbit. Rabbits are small mammals in the family Leporidae. The European rabbit, which has been introduced on every continent except Antarctica, is familiar throughout the world as a wild prey animal and as a domesticated form of livestock and pet. With its widespread effect on ecologies and cultures, the rabbit (or bunny) is, in many areas of the world, a part of daily life—as food, clothing, a companion, and a source of artistic inspiration.

Written by English author Richard Adams, Watership Down is a classic story of adventure and survival, told through the eyes of a community of rabbits, who set off in search of a new home when they fear the imminent destruction of their warren.
